Reading Response #1

The first reading response is due Thursday, February 8th (if you're in a Tuesday/Thursday class) or Monday, February 5th (if you're in the Monday night Holy Cross class). In a 250- to 500-word response, you are to answer the following question:
What does Descartes say he cannot be certain of? What does Descartes say he can be certain of? Do you agree with Descartes? Why or why not?

The response is based on the reading from pages 58-71 of the textbook.

I was reading about Descartes' idea that even basic principles of mathmatics (and stuff that exists independently of the nature of the universe) could even be uncertain. Does he really say a super-powerful demon might be trying to trick him? I mean...is that a real, literal translation that they have in the book?

Well the end of the chapter asks something like "what about basic truths that obviously further our survival (like eating stops you from being hungry and keeps you alive). That's not nessecarily true either.

Jerry Jay Carol wrote a book called "A Dogs Life" that I really enjoy. In it there's a maze where reality is reversed, so that the more you eat or drink the hungrier/thirstier you would be come and so on. I guess it's possible that we could be on some kind of...planet like that or something.
